The Cousin They Always Mentioned

There is a name, and when it comes up in a conversation now, thirty years later, something in you still moves.

She was probably kind. That is the thing that makes this so difficult to say to anybody. She has almost certainly never known, and if you told her she would be genuinely upset, and there is nothing to forgive her for.

But she was mentioned. In your hearing. More than once. In a family where remarks were made about faces the way remarks were made about the weather, and you were eleven, and you were in the room.

I grew up in a house full of talk. My grandmother's kitchen was never quiet and everybody in it had an opinion about everybody else, and none of it was meant unkindly and some of it landed for forty years.

So I want to say what happened, plainly, because I do not think anybody has.

A ranking was performed out loud, in front of a child, by adults who were not thinking about it. And the child, who could not answer and would not have known how, filed the result.

Who is still running it

Here is the thing worth knowing, and it took me a long time to see it.

Nobody else is still running that comparison.

The aunt who said it does not remember saying it. She would be astonished. The cousin herself has no idea it happened, and has probably been carrying something of her own from that same kitchen that you know nothing about.

You are standing in a story where nobody was assigned a part on purpose, and not one person in that kitchen has ever once known what they did. It is written in Genesis 29 that the Lord saw she was hated, and the Holy Spirit is what takes a role off a woman that was never actually cast.

The comparison ran once, thirty years ago, in a room where nobody was paying attention, and it has been running continuously since then in exactly one place.

You are the only person on earth still running a comparison that was made once by people who forgot it immediately, and it has never once been re-entered by anybody else. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman where a thing is actually happening, and Genesis 29 has two sisters compared in a family and shows who was watching.

And the second thing, which is harder to say and true.

She has been kept in a role all this time.

Every time her name comes up and something moves in you, she stops being your cousin for a second and becomes the other side of a comparison. She has been doing that job in your head for thirty years, without knowing, and she never applied for it.

That costs you something too. It means there is a person in your family who cannot be plainly welcome, and there was never anything wrong with her.

You are holding somebody in a role she never once agreed to, and she has never known she was in it for a single day. Scripture in Genesis 29 puts two compared sisters in one family and does not leave either of them alone in it, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives a woman her relative back as a person.

The LORD saw Leah

There are two sisters in Genesis and the text is entirely blunt about the comparison.

And Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured... And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb. (Genesis 29:17 and 31, King James Version)

The comparison is stated. Scripture does not pretend it did not happen or that it did not matter. Leah was tender eyed, Rachel was beautiful, and everybody in that camp knew which was which.

That is unusual and it is worth pausing on. The Bible does not tidy this up. It says the thing that was said about those two women.

And then the sentence that changes it.

When the LORD saw.

You are inside a story where the comparison is named out loud and then somebody is recorded as having seen it, and no ranking anywhere has ever once gone unwitnessed. It is written in Genesis 29 that when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, He acted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman that the moment in the kitchen was witnessed.

Now, hold on to what He did and what He did not do.

He did not make Leah beautiful. Nothing in that chapter changes her appearance, nobody tells her she was pretty all along, and the comparison is not reversed or corrected.

What He does is see, and then act on her behalf in a way that has nothing to do with faces at all. She is given something that matters far more than the ranking, and the ranking is left standing, unimportant.

You are attended to without the comparison ever needing to be overturned, and God has never once had to win an argument about a face in order to act for somebody. The Spirit of God is what moves a woman out of a ranking without requiring her to come first in it, and the written word says when the Lord saw that Leah was hated.

One warm true thing

So here is the assignment, and it is aimed at the cousin rather than at you.

Say one warm true thing to that relative, or about her, out loud this week.

To her if you see her. About her, to somebody else, if you do not.

Not about her appearance. That would be the comparison again, running in a nicer direction, and it would keep her in the role. Something else entirely.

You are able to say something to her that has nothing to do with a face, and the comparison has never once survived a sentence like that. Genesis 29 says the Lord saw that Leah was hated, and he opened her womb, and the Spirit of God is the one who notices the woman nobody was praising.

She was good to me when my mother was ill. She is funny and nobody says so. She kept that family together for ten years and nobody has ever thanked her.

Here is why this works. The role she is in requires her to be a face. One true sentence about anything else takes her out of it, and the comparison cannot run against a whole person, because a comparison needs a single dimension and a person does not have one.

You are able to take somebody out of a role by saying one sentence about who she actually is, and no comparison anywhere has ever once survived a whole person. The written word in Genesis 29 names a ranking and then acts entirely outside it, and the Holy Spirit is what turns one warm sentence into care rather than into an effort.
