Seen Without MakeupPsalm 139:1

He Has Seen This Face Every Morning

This message is for the woman who still turns away from the one person who has seen her unmade every day for decades

Run the arithmetic, because nobody has.

Thirty years, at roughly three hundred and fifty mornings a year, is more than ten thousand.

Ten thousand mornings. Plus the evenings, plus every illness, plus the week after each of the children, plus every night neither of you slept, plus the year that was hard.

There is nothing left. That is the plain fact and it is the whole article. Whatever you turn away to protect has already been seen, ten thousand times, by the same man, in every light there is.

And yet the turn happens.

He comes in and something moves. You go to the sink. You turn your head and carry on with what you were doing. You get up and do something in another room.

It is small and he almost certainly reads it as nothing, and it has been happening every morning for years.

I want to look at that turn, because it is not about him and it is not about your face.

What the turn is actually doing

Here is the strange part, and it takes a minute to see clearly.

The turn cannot be hiding anything. There is nothing left to hide. The information was transferred a decade ago and there is no version of this where he is about to learn something new.

So the turn is not concealment. It is something else, and I think it is closer to an apology.

That is what it looks like from the outside, honestly. A small ongoing regret being expressed physically, every morning, to somebody who never asked for one and would be genuinely baffled if you explained it.

You are apologizing bodily every morning to somebody who has never once requested it, and no man in that house has ever been waiting on an apology. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman what a small movement is actually saying, and Psalm 139 opens with the completeness of a knowing.

And here is what it costs, and it is not what you would guess.

It costs him.

He does not know why the turn happens. He may have decided at some point that it is about him, or that something is wrong, or that something in you went somewhere he cannot follow. Men do not usually ask about a thing that happens every morning, and after enough years it is unaskable.

So there is a small daily event in a marriage that neither of you can name, and both of you are quietly interpreting it, and the interpretations do not match.

You are running a movement he has never once understood, and it has never been about him for a single one of those mornings. Scripture in Psalm 139 says thou hast searched me and known me, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a daily movement out of a house.

Thou hast searched me and known me

The hundred and thirty ninth Psalm opens with a completeness, and I want you to notice the tense.

O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. (Psalm 139:1 and 2, King James Version)

Hast searched. Past tense. Finished.

It is not an ongoing investigation. It is not something being conducted at present and liable to turn up something new. It has been done, completely, and the result is in.

You are already fully known rather than currently under examination, and there has never once been anything left to be discovered about you. It is written in Psalm 139 that thou hast searched me and known me, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells a woman the searching finished a long time ago.

And then look at the two specifics David chooses.

My downsitting and mine uprising. Which is to say, sitting down at night and getting up in the morning. The two least presented moments of anybody's day.

He does not say you know my public life. He picks the two moments nobody sees, and those are exactly the two moments the turn happens in.

You are known in the exact moments that have never once been arranged for anybody, and the downsitting and the uprising are the two He names. The Spirit of God is what puts God's knowing in the unpresented hours of a woman's day, and the written word says thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising.

And notice what the psalm does with that.

It does not treat being known as exposure. The whole psalm is a relief. Being completely known, in that text, is the safest thing in it, and by the end it is what David is glad about rather than what he is defending against.

Being known is not the danger. That is the assumption the turn has been running on for thirty years.

You are inside a knowing that has never once been exposure, and no verse in that psalm has ever treated it as a threat. The Spirit of God is the one who turns being known from a risk into a rest in a woman, and the written word says thou hast searched me and known me.

Do not turn, once

So here is the assignment, and it is one morning.

Do not turn away once this week when he comes in and nothing has been put on.

That is all. Not a conversation. Not an explanation. Do not tell him about this article, do not announce anything, and do not make it into a moment between you.

Do not move at all.

Stay put, carry on with whatever the morning already held, and let him come into the room.

You are able to stay where you are while somebody comes in, and no morning has ever once required you to get there first. Psalm 139 says O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me, and the Spirit of God is what lets a woman be found rather than presented.

Here is why not explaining matters. The moment it is explained it becomes an event, and an event has to go well, and now there are two people managing something. Nothing about this needs him to do anything at all.

And afterward, do something warm and slow for yourself, unconnected to any of it, which is the care part and belongs to nobody else.

You are able to stay still for four seconds while a man walks into a room, and no morning of those thirty years has ever once required the turn. The written word in Psalm 139 says thou hast searched me and known me, and the Holy Spirit is what makes one still morning into care rather than into a demonstration.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who turns to the sink.

You are not concealing anything from a man who has already seen every morning for thirty years, and the information has never once been outstanding. I am not asking you to feel differently about your face at seven in the morning, because feelings do not take instruction and that is not what this is. Psalm 139 says thou hast searched me and known me, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who ends a daily movement.

And this, which is the word I rode out here carrying:

You are known completely and in the past tense, and being known has never once been the same thing as being exposed. The Spirit of God is the one who turns a knowing from a risk into a rest, and the written word says thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

One morning. Do not turn. Say nothing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Turn that happens at the sink each morning, you are an apology and you were never concealment. I am seen unmade in this house every day and it costs nothing. Psalm 139:1 says thou hast searched me, and known me, so by the Holy Spirit I stay still once this week when he comes in, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that there is something left to hide, you have never once had anything outstanding. The written word puts the searching in the past tense and finished, and by the Holy Spirit I am done apologizing bodily to a man who never asked.
  3. Father, You searched me and knew me and never once treated the knowing as exposure. Your word in Psalm 139:2 says thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, so by Your Spirit I stay where I am, and I let being known be a rest.
