There was a Tuesday about three weeks ago when it was fine.
You remember it. Good sleep, decent light, nothing going on. You went to the mirror and there was genuinely nothing there, and for about a second and a half something in you relaxed.
And then you found something.
Not a big thing. You had to look for it. You turned your head, and you moved closer, and there it was, and the second and a half ended and the day carried on exactly as every other day has carried on for fifteen years.
That Tuesday is the most important piece of evidence you own and you have never once looked at it.
Because on that day the skin was not the problem. It was fine. Everybody agreed. And the thing still happened, which means the thing was never waiting on the skin at all.
I want to be careful in how I say the next part, because it can sound like an accusation and it is not one.
You are not looking for information at that mirror. You have not been for years. The looking is not a search that could ever come back empty, and a search that cannot come back empty is not a search. It is an appetite.
And appetites do not get satisfied by finding what they are looking for. They get satisfied by being fed something else entirely.
A search that always finds
Here is why the mirror can never come back empty, and it is worth knowing plainly.
Human skin is not smooth. It has never been smooth on anybody, at any age, in any condition, in the whole history of people. It is a living surface with pores and texture and color that varies across it, and it is doing all of that because it is alive.
Which means that a woman who goes looking, with enough attention and close enough, will find something every single time. Not sometimes. Every time. On the best day of her life, in the best light she has ever stood in, at nineteen years old.
So the finding proves nothing. It was guaranteed before you got to the mirror.
You are running a search that was always going to succeed, and it has never once been capable of returning nothing. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman that a result was guaranteed before she started, and Psalm 107 says who actually satisfies a longing and what He fills it with.
Now the harder half.
If the finding was guaranteed, then the finding was never the point. What the mirror provides is not information. It is an occupation, and it goes to the same place every time, and it reliably produces the same feeling.
And here is why that matters. A feeling you go and produce on purpose, twenty times a day, is not being inflicted on you by your face. It is a habit with a location, and habits with locations are much easier to work with than facts about a body.
You are producing something at that mirror rather than discovering it, and your face has never once been the author of what happens there. Scripture in Psalm 107 says He satisfieth the longing soul and filleth the hungry soul with goodness, and the Spirit of God is the one who feeds a woman something that actually fills.
He satisfieth the longing soul
The hundred and seventh Psalm says a thing about appetite that I have never found anywhere else in quite the same words.
For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness. (Psalm 107:9, King James Version)
Two words are doing the work. Longing, and hungry.
The psalm does not say He answers the questioning soul. It does not say He informs. It says satisfies, and fills, which are words about appetite rather than about information.
And that is exactly the right category for what happens at that mirror, because you have never once come away from it with information. You have come away fed something, and it was not good, and you were hungry again in ninety minutes, which is what happens when a hunger gets fed the wrong thing.
You are hungry rather than uninformed, and no amount of looking has ever once been able to fill the thing that is actually empty. It is written in Psalm 107 that He filleth the hungry soul with goodness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts something in a woman that the mirror was never carrying.
And notice the word goodness at the end of it.
Not answers. Not proof. Not a report. Goodness, which is the thing an appetite is actually after, and the reason it keeps going back to a place that has never once produced any.
Which is why I am not going to hand you a better thing to think at the mirror. That would be information again, and information is not what is missing.
You are being offered goodness rather than a better verdict, and a verdict has never once been able to fill anybody. The Spirit of God is what feeds a longing that has been going to the wrong table for fifteen years, and the written word says He satisfieth the longing soul.
Stopping after one
So here is the assignment, and it is about stopping rather than starting.
Tonight, do one act of care for your skin and then stop. Do not go back for a second look.
The first part is easy. You already do something. The whole exercise is in the second part, which is the not going back.
Because here is the actual shape of the habit. You do the thing. Then you check whether the thing worked. And the check is where the appetite gets fed, and the appetite is the entire problem, and it has been dressed up as diligence for so long that stopping will feel like carelessness.
You are feeding something every time you check, and diligence has never once been the true name for what that habit is doing. Psalm 107 says he satisfieth the longing soul, and the Spirit of God is the one who fills an appetite that checking was only ever going to enlarge.
It is not carelessness. Care ends. That is one of the things that distinguishes it. A person caring for something finishes, and puts the lid on, and walks out of the room.
The version that never finishes is the other job.
You are able to finish an act of care and walk out of the room, and there has never once been a rule that said care had to be inspected afterward. The written word in Psalm 107 puts the filling of a hungry soul in God's hands rather than in a result, and the Holy Spirit is what lets a woman put the lid on and leave.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who found something on a good day.
You are not conducting a search at that mirror, and a hunt that succeeds every single time has never once been gathering information about anything. I am not telling you there is nothing there and I would not, because nobody who loves you should be making claims about a face. Psalm 107 says He satisfieth the longing soul, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who feeds a hunger that a mirror has been feeding badly.
And this, which is the word I came here carrying:
You are filled with goodness by somebody who does that on purpose, and no verdict about a face has ever once been able to do that job. The Spirit of God is the one who satisfies a longing soul rather than informing it, and the written word says He filleth the hungry soul with goodness.
One thing. Then stop. Then out of the room.
Declare this over yourself
- Hunt that always finds something, you are an appetite and you were never a search. Psalm 107:9 says he satisfieth the longing soul, so by the Holy Spirit I do one thing tonight and I stop, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that stopping means letting myself go, you have never once been the truth, because care finishes and management does not. The written word says He filleth the hungry soul with goodness, and by the Holy Spirit I am done feeding a hunger at a mirror.
- Father, You satisfy a longing soul and You have never once handed anybody a verdict instead. Your word in Psalm 107:9 says You fill the hungry soul with goodness, so by Your Spirit I put the lid on tonight and walk out of that room.
