In the house I grew up in, a guest was never asked a single question about themselves before they had eaten.
That was my grandmother's law and nobody broke it. You do not put a person under any kind of examination while they are still standing in your doorway. Feed them, sit them down, let them get warm. Questions later, if at all.
I have thought about that law many times since, because a great many of us grew up in houses where the guests were treated better than the family.
You know what was said. It was probably said in a kitchen, probably by somebody who loved you, probably in front of two or three other people, and probably more than once. Something about your skin. A word for it, maybe. A comparison with a cousin. A remark that arrived as observation and landed as classification.
You were nine, or eleven, or six. And you did not have the equipment to receive it as anything other than information about what you are.
I want to be careful here in a way that some people are not.
I am not going to help you build a case against the people in that kitchen.
That is not because they were right. It is because a case against them will not lift the sentence off you, and the sentence is the whole problem. Somebody could apologize to you tomorrow, sincerely and in detail, and the thing that runs when you look at your own skin would run again on Thursday, because it stopped being theirs a very long time ago.
How a remark becomes a fact
There is a mechanism here worth understanding, because it explains why this has lasted.
When somebody says a thing about a child in front of other people, the child does not evaluate it. Children do not have the machinery for that. What a child does is file it, whole, under things that are true about me, because the alternative is to conclude that an adult who feeds them is wrong, and a nine year old cannot afford to think that.
So it went in as a fact rather than as an opinion. And it has been sitting in the fact drawer for thirty five years, where nothing gets reviewed, because facts do not get reviewed. Opinions do.
You are holding an opinion that was filed as a fact when you were too young to file it anywhere else, and it has never once been reviewed since. The Holy Spirit is what moves a sentence out of the wrong drawer in a woman, and Psalm 27 speaks about what happens when the people closest to somebody do not give them what they needed.
Now the part about the people who said it.
Almost nobody in that kitchen was being cruel. Most of them were repeating something that had been said about them, in the same kind of kitchen, twenty five years earlier, and had never once been examined by anybody in the line.
That does not make it harmless. It landed with full weight and it stayed. But it does change what you are dealing with, because you are not dealing with somebody's opinion of you. You are dealing with a sentence in transit, passing through a family, which happened to stop at you.
You are carrying a line that was in motion long before you existed, and it has never once been a considered judgment about your particular face. Scripture in Psalm 27 puts the failing of a mother and father in the open without ever calling them enemies, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a sentence from the mouth it came out of.
Then the LORD will take me up
David has a verse about this that is not sentimental and never has been.
When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up. (Psalm 27:10, King James Version)
Notice what he does not do with that sentence.
He does not accuse anybody. There is no case here, no list of wrongs, no demand for an apology. He says a plain thing about a gap and then he says who fills it, and then he moves on in the psalm to other matters entirely.
That is a remarkably free way to hold a real wound.
And look at the verb. Take me up. It is what you do with a child on the floor of a kitchen. You do not lecture the child, you do not explain the situation, you do not adjudicate what has just been said. You bend down and you pick them up.
You are somebody God bends down and picks up rather than somebody He explains things to, and there has never once been a version of that verse with conditions on it. It is written in Psalm 27 that when a father and mother forsake, the Lord takes up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that picking up in a grown woman at a bathroom sink.
Now bring that into the room where you actually live.
What was said in that kitchen created a gap. A nine year old needed to be told that her skin was fine and nobody told her, and instead somebody said the other thing, and the gap has been there ever since.
Psalm 27 does not fill that gap by getting an apology out of anybody. It fills it from a different direction entirely.
You are met from another direction than the one the wound came from, and no apology from that kitchen has ever once been what this was waiting on. The Spirit of God is what closes a gap that nobody living can close now, and the written word says then the Lord will take me up.
Washing a face the way you would wash a guest's cup
So here is the practical part, and it is about intention rather than method.
Tonight, wash your face the way my grandmother would have washed a guest's cup.
I mean that precisely. Not carefully in the sense of anxiously. Carefully in the sense of a thing being attended to properly by somebody who is not in a hurry and is not looking for a fault in it.
Nothing changes about what you use. Nothing changes about how. There is no method in this article and there is not going to be one. The only thing that changes is who is doing it and why.
You are changing an intention rather than a method, and no product on any shelf has ever once been the thing carrying that verdict. Psalm 27:10 says then the Lord will take me up, and the Holy Spirit is the one who changes what a pair of hands is for at a sink.
Because at the moment the washing is being done by a woman carrying out a repair on a defect she was told about in 1987. That is what makes it feel like maintenance on a fault. Same water. Same two minutes. Entirely different job.
Do it as care instead. Warm water, no rush, no inspection at the end. Then dry properly rather than quickly, which takes about eight extra seconds and changes the whole character of it.
You are able to change the intention without changing one single step of what you do, and the water has never once been the part that was carrying the verdict. The written word in Psalm 27 says the Lord takes up where others did not, and the Holy Spirit is what turns two ordinary minutes into care rather than repair.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who was told something in a kitchen a long time ago.
You are not the verdict that was handed down in that room, and a line passing through a family has never once been a description of your actual face. I am not going to tell you what your skin is like, and I would not, because no man should be issuing findings on a face he cannot see. Psalm 27 says the Lord takes up where a mother and father did not, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who lifts a thirty five year old sentence.
And this, which is the word I came here carrying:
You are taken up rather than argued with, and God has never once required an apology from anybody before He picked somebody up. The Spirit of God is the one who fills a gap from a direction the wound never came from, and the written word says then the Lord will take me up.
Warm water. No hurry. No inspection.
Declare this over yourself
- Sentence spoken in a kitchen in 1987, you are somebody else's line and you were never a fact about me. Psalm 27:10 says then the Lord will take me up, so by the Holy Spirit I wash my face tonight as care and not repair, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that they were only being honest, you have never once been the truth, because a remark in transit is not a judgment. The written word puts the filling of the gap on God, and by the Holy Spirit I am done keeping an opinion in the drawer marked facts.
- Father, You take up where a mother and a father did not, and You have never once waited for an apology first. Your word in Psalm 27:10 says the Lord will take me up, so by Your Spirit I set that sentence down and let my own hands be kind at that sink.
Psalm 27:10
