Skin I Was GivenActs 10:34

This Skin Came With A History

This message is for the woman whose skin is read by other people before she has opened her mouth, and who wants to stop treating her own body as an argument

Back home the ocean tells you what it has been doing.

You can read a beach in the morning and know what the night was like. Wind from which direction, how hard, how long. The sand keeps the record and anybody who grew up there can read it.

That is fine for a beach. A beach is not walking into a room trying to say something about itself.

You do, and this is what I want to sit with. There is a reading that happens before you speak.

Somebody looks up. Something gets decided, or half decided, or assumed, in less than a second, on no information at all. And you know it happens because you have felt it happen, many times, in rooms where nobody said anything unkind and nothing was actually done.

And so, over years, something quietly changed about how you come into a room. You started arriving already answering. Slightly braced. A little more prepared than the moment requires, a little quicker to establish something, ready to be more articulate than the conversation needs.

That is exhausting in a way that nobody who has not done it can measure.

I want to name it precisely. The tiredness is not from the reading. Other people's readings are their own business and they cost them, not you.

The tiredness is from the answering.

A body treated as an argument

Here is the shape of what has happened, and I say it as gently as I can.

Somewhere along the way, your body stopped being a body and became a case.

A body is a thing you live in. It gets tired, it gets cold, it wants warmth and water and sleep, it needs washing and tending and rest. That is all a body has ever been for anybody.

You are living in a body rather than making a case, and no body anywhere has ever once needed to be argued for. The written word takes the face out of the judging entirely, and the Spirit of God is the one who hands a woman back an ordinary body.

A case is something you make. It has an audience, it anticipates objections, it is always slightly ahead of the conversation, and it is never off duty because you never know who is in the room.

And when a body becomes a case, care goes out of it entirely. Nobody tends an argument, or warms one, or puts it to bed early. Everything you do gets a purpose attached, and the purpose is always about how it will land in a room, and none of it is about the woman in the body being warm and looked after.

You are living inside something you have been treating as a case rather than as a body, and a case has never once needed the things a body actually needs. The Holy Spirit is what gives a woman her own body back to her as a body, and Acts 10 records the day it was said out loud that God does not read people that way.

And I want to be careful, because there is a version of this that tells you the reading is imaginary, and that would be a lie and you would know it.

The reading is real. It has happened to you and it will happen again, and pretending otherwise would be no use to anybody.

But notice what the answering does that the reading cannot do. The reading lasts a second and belongs to somebody else. The answering runs all day, every day, inside you, and it is the only part of this that is taking anything from your actual life.

You are carrying the cost of somebody else's second, and the room has never once been able to charge you for it without your help. Scripture in Acts 10 says God is no respecter of persons, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the answering out of a woman's walk into a room.

God is no respecter of persons

There is a moment in Acts where a man says a thing out loud that he had just then understood, and the church has never got over it.

Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons. (Acts 10:34, King James Version)

Look at the phrase. Respecter of persons.

In the old English of that translation it does not mean respect the way we use the word now. It means face taker. Somebody who looks at the outside of a person and decides on that basis. A judge who lifts his eyes, sees who is standing there, and adjusts the ruling accordingly.

And Peter, who was not a man given to careful theological phrasing, says it plainly: God is not one of those.

You are not read by God the way a room reads you, and there has never once been a second in which the outside of you adjusted anything with Him. It is written in Acts 10 that God is no respecter of persons, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets that land in a woman's body rather than only in her theology.

And notice where Peter is standing when he says it.

He is in a house he was raised not to enter, having a conversation he was raised not to have, with people he had spent his whole life being told something about. He is not saying a comfortable thing from a distance. He is saying it in the exact room where it costs him something.

Which means this is not a sentiment. It is a finding, made in the field, by a man who had to have his own assumptions taken off him first.

You are held by a judgment that was never once adjusted by a doorway, and no room you have ever walked into has changed one line of it. The Spirit of God is what puts the true reading underneath a woman while the other one carries on above her, and the written word says of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.

Something warm, with nobody watching

So here is the assignment, and the condition on it matters more than the act.

This week, do one warm slow thing for your body with nobody in the house to see it.

Nobody. That is the whole condition. Not your family, not a friend, not anybody who might comment.

Because here is what a case never gets. A case is always for somebody. Everything performed, everything anticipating, everything measured by how it will be received. And a body that has been a case for twenty years has never once had a single thing done for it with no audience in the world.

You are permitted to be off duty behind a shut door, and no room on the other side of it has ever once been owed a performance. Acts 10:34 says God is no respecter of persons, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman stop anticipating an audience that is not there.

A long hot bath with the door shut. Warm water and slow hands. Sitting somewhere warm doing nothing.

There is no method and there is no product and there never will be. Warmth, slowness, and a closed door.

You are able to do one thing with no audience in existence, and a body has never once needed a witness in order to be cared for. The written word in Acts 10 takes the face out of the judging, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a closed door into care rather than into hiding.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who arrives in rooms already answering.

You are not an argument that has to be won at a doorway, and a body has never once been a case somebody needed to make. I am not telling you the reading does not happen, because it does and you know it does, and I will not insult you by pretending. Acts 10 says God is no respecter of persons, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the answering out of a walk into a room.

And this, which is the word I came here carrying:

You are read by One who has never once lifted His eyes and adjusted anything, and no doorway on earth has ever altered a line of that reading. The Spirit of God is the one who gives a woman her body back as a body, and the written word says of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.

Warm water. Closed door. Nobody watching.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Answering that starts in the doorway, you are the actual cost and you were never the reading. Acts 10:34 says God is no respecter of persons, so by the Holy Spirit I take one warm hour this week with nobody watching, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that being off duty is unsafe, you have never once been the whole truth, because a house can be safe. The written word takes the face out of the judging, and by the Holy Spirit I am done treating my own body as a case to be made.
  3. Father, You have never once lifted Your eyes and adjusted anything about me. Your word in Acts 10:34 says You are no respecter of persons, so by Your Spirit I close the door, and I let warmth be care, and I put the argument down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
