I Cannot Match My Own Picture

There is a version of your face on a screen that is slightly better than the one in your bathroom, and you made it.

Not dishonestly. Nobody would call it that. A little light adjusted. One thing softened. The one out of eleven that was chosen, and then a small improvement made to that one, in about forty seconds, without much thought.

And now there are two.

That is the situation and nobody set out to create it. There is a version of you that is a permanent, unchanging, well lit reference, and there is a version of you that is a living woman at eleven at night, and the second one keeps arriving in the bathroom and losing to the first.

I want to look hard at that, because it is a genuinely new problem. Nobody's grandmother had this. And a new problem deserves to be described properly rather than moralized at.

What an edit actually is

Here is what nobody says clearly enough.

An edited photograph is not a better version of your face. It is a different object entirely.

It has no depth, no movement, no temperature. It does not have a bad night in it, or a good conversation, or the particular thing your mouth does when somebody says something funny. It is a flat, fixed, chosen and adjusted surface, and it is not a rival because it is not the same kind of thing.

Losing to it is like a river losing to a photograph of a river.

You are being compared with an object that has never once been the same kind of thing as a face, and no living body has ever competed with a fixed surface. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman what she is actually looking at, and 2 Corinthians 3 says what a person becomes by beholding something.

And here is the second half, which is where the real trouble sits.

The edited one is available constantly.

It is on your phone. It is on a wall somewhere. Other people have it. It gets looked at hundreds of times, by you and by others, and every one of those looks is a small deposit that makes it feel more like the reference version and less like one adjusted photograph from a Tuesday.

The bathroom version, meanwhile, is only ever seen once at a time, at the end of a day, by one tired person.

You are looking at one version constantly and the other only when you are tired, and no comparison anywhere has ever once been run on terms like that. Scripture in 2 Corinthians 3 says we are changed by what we behold, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves a woman's beholding onto something else.

Changed into the same image

Paul says something about beholding that is worth knowing whether or not you have a phone.

But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. (2 Corinthians 3:18, King James Version)

Look at the mechanism he describes.

Beholding, and being changed into what you behold. That is the whole engine of the verse, and it is not mystical. It is how attention works. What a person looks at for long enough starts to shape them.

Which means the hundreds of looks at that edited image are not neutral. They are doing something. Attention always does.

You are being shaped by whatever you have been beholding, and hundreds of looks a week have never once been a neutral activity. It is written in 2 Corinthians 3 that beholding the glory of the Lord we are changed into the same image, and the Holy Spirit is the one who redirects what a woman is looking at.

And look at the two words at the front of the verse, because they are the ones for you.

With open face.

Unveiled. Nothing over it. Paul is drawing a contrast with Moses, who put a veil over his face when he came down the mountain, and he says that the covering is gone now and we come with open face.

A woman with two faces, one of them adjusted and permanently available, is not coming with an open face to anything, including to herself. That is not a moral charge. It is what has happened, and it happened by accident.

You are invited to come with an open face, and no version of that verse has ever once involved an adjusted one. The Spirit of God is what takes a covering off a woman without shaming her for having one, and the written word says with open face beholding as in a glass.

Post nothing this week

So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately about supply.

Post nothing this week, and give your face ten warm slow minutes instead.

Not delete anything. Not a statement, not a break announced to anybody, not a resolution about screens. One week where the second version does not get added to.

Here is why. Every new one is a fresh deposit into the reference version, and the reference version is what the bathroom is losing to. One week without a deposit is not much, and it is the only thing available that reduces the supply rather than fighting the comparison.

And the ten warm minutes are not a substitute or a consolation. They are the actual point. That is a body being cared for by the woman living in it, which is the one thing neither version of the photograph has ever received.

You are able to stop adding to a reference version for one week, and it has never once been possible to win the comparison by improving the other side. The written word in 2 Corinthians 3 puts the changing in the beholding, and the Holy Spirit is what turns ten warm minutes into care for the woman who is actually here.
