She Heard Me Say It About Myself

She said it in the car about her own face and you nearly had to pull over.

Not because it was terrible. It was small, and it was said lightly, and she went straight back to what she was doing.

It was the phrasing. She used your words. The exact ones, in the order you use them, with the same shrug at the end that you do without knowing you do it.

And you have not stopped thinking about it since.

Now, I want to head something off immediately, because I know exactly where a woman goes with this at two in the morning, and it is not a useful place.

This is not a guilt piece.

You did not do this to her. Nobody sits down and teaches a child a sentence like that. There is no version of the last eleven years where you were making a decision about what to model, and any article that lets you spend the next hour indicting yourself has wasted your time and mine.

But it happened, and something is being learned, and both of those are true without a single one of them being your fault.

How a sentence gets learned

Here is the thing about children that everybody knows and nobody applies to themselves.

They do not learn what you tell them. They learn what is in the room.

That daughter has been told, sincerely and repeatedly, that she is lovely. Every word of it was meant, and she has heard it a thousand times.

You are raising somebody who has heard the words a thousand times and watched something else entirely, and no child anywhere has ever once believed a sentence over a demonstration. Deuteronomy 6 says thou shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and the Spirit of God is what makes a mother's own mirror part of the teaching.

And she has also heard, in the background, four thousand times, in passing, without emphasis, a woman she loves saying a particular kind of thing about a face.

The instruction was in the first one. The lesson was in the second one, because the second one was not being performed for her, and children are extremely good at telling the difference between what is said to them and what is plainly true in a house.

You are teaching from the background rather than from the instruction, and no direct sentence has ever once carried the weight that the incidental ones carry. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman what is actually being learned in her own kitchen, and Deuteronomy 6 puts teaching in exactly the places nobody thinks of as teaching.

And here is the second half, and it is the more hopeful one.

The same mechanism runs in both directions.

If the background is what teaches, then a different background teaches differently, and it does not require a conversation, a confession, or a change of feeling. It is care rather than repair, which is the only kind that ever works. It requires a different sentence to be present in the room.

That is a far smaller thing than what you have been contemplating at two in the morning.

You are able to change what is being learned by changing what is present, and it has never once required a conversation with anybody. Scripture in Deuteronomy 6 puts the teaching into sitting and walking and lying down and rising, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary sentence into an inheritance.

Teach them diligently

There is an instruction in Deuteronomy that is famous, and the second half of it is the useful part.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (Deuteronomy 6:7, King James Version)

Look at where the teaching happens.

Sitting in the house. Walking by the way. Lying down. Rising up.

Not one of those is a lesson. There is no classroom anywhere in that verse and no teaching voice. It is four ordinary situations, and the instruction is to talk about these things in them.

Which means the Bible already knows what you found out in the car. It knows that what forms a child is what is said in the ordinary hours, and it puts the whole weight of the instruction there rather than on a formal moment.

You are told plainly where teaching actually happens, and there has never once been a verse putting it in the sitting down and formal conversation. It is written in Deuteronomy 6 that we talk of them when we sit in the house and walk by the way, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary hour into the place where something is handed on.

And notice that it is a relief rather than a burden.

If teaching happened in formal moments, you would have to arrange one, and it would have to go well, and your daughter would have to be in the mood.

Because it happens in the ordinary hours, it can be done in the car, in a kitchen, at a mirror, in four seconds, without anybody making an occasion of it.

You are handed a way of teaching that requires no occasion, and there has never once been a requirement that a child be sat down for this. The Spirit of God is what puts something new into an ordinary hour, and the written word says when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way.

One sentence, in front of her

So here is the assignment, and it is four seconds long.

Say one true kind thing about your own face out loud in front of her, once.

Not to her. About yours, in her hearing, the way the other kind of sentence has always been said.

I like my hands. I have got my mother's eyes and I always liked her face. That is a good strong face and it has done me well.

You are able to say one true kind thing about yourself where a child can hear it, and no household anywhere has ever once been taught by something other than what was said in it. Deuteronomy 6 says thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and the Holy Spirit is the one who changes what a kitchen hears.

And then carry on with whatever the moment already held. Do not look at her, do not explain it, and do not make it a moment. The whole power of it is that it goes into the background, which is where the teaching happens.

Do not apologize for the old sentences either. She does not need an apology and it would turn something invisible into a subject.

One new sentence, in the ordinary hours, with no ceremony on it at all.

You are able to put a new sentence into a background that has only carried one kind, and it has never once needed an occasion or an apology. The written word in Deuteronomy 6 puts the teaching in the walking and the sitting, and the Holy Spirit is what turns four seconds in a kitchen into care rather than into a performance.
