Care Not RepairHebrews 4:9

Rest That Is Not Earning Anything

This message is for the woman who cannot rest without producing something by it, and wants one half hour that owes nobody a result

You can rest. Let me say that first because it needs saying.

You rest on a Saturday afternoon. You sit down in the evening. You have holidays and you take them and you enjoy them.

So this is not about a woman who never stops. It is about the terms.

Because every single one of those has something attached. The Saturday afternoon is so that you can face Monday. The evening sit down is because you have earned it after that day. The holiday is so that everybody comes back better. The bath is because your back has been bad.

Every rest has a purpose, and the purpose is always downstream of the rest, and it is always about being more able to do something afterward.

That is not rest. That is maintenance of a working asset, and you are the asset.

I want to name it clearly because a woman living under those terms will look, to everybody watching, like a woman who rests. Nobody is worried about you. And underneath, there has not been one hour in fifteen years that was not paying for something.

The exchange rate

Here is the arithmetic that has been running.

Every hour of rest is priced. It is worth however much it improves you afterward, and it is justified by that improvement, and if the improvement does not arrive then the hour was a waste.

Which means there has never been a free hour in it. There have been loans, and every one of them had to be repaid in productivity by Wednesday.

You are being handed something rather than lent it, and no rest that God calls rest has ever once come with a repayment attached. It is written in Hebrews 4 that there remaineth a rest to the people of God, and the Spirit of God is what cancels a debt a woman has been paying out of her own hours.

And notice what happens when the repayment does not come. When you rest and then have a bad day anyway, there is something in you that treats the rest as having failed, and the next time the case for resting is slightly weaker.

That is a currency system. And nobody set it up on purpose, and nobody in your house has ever asked you to run it, and it has been running for fifteen years.

You are borrowing hours that have to be repaid by Wednesday, and no hour of rest has ever once been given to you free of charge. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman the exchange rate she has been living under, and Hebrews 4 says there is a rest that remains rather than one that gets spent.

And here is the cost, which is not tiredness.

The cost is that rest under those terms is not restful.

You cannot actually rest while an hour is being audited. Some part of you is watching to see whether it is working, and the watching is a job, and so the hour contains a job in it, which is precisely what it was supposed to be free of.

You are working through the exact hour that was supposed to have no work in it, and an audited hour has never once been able to rest anybody. Scripture in Hebrews 4 says there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the auditing out of an evening.

There remaineth a rest

There is a sentence in the fourth chapter of Hebrews that uses one word I want you to have.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (Hebrews 4:9 and 10, King James Version)

Remaineth. It is still there.

Not a rest that has been used up. Not one that gets issued when the work is finished. It remains, present tense, available, and its availability is not conditional on anything having been completed.

You are looking at a rest that has never once run out and has never once been issued as a reward. It is written in Hebrews 4 that there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a woman into a thing that was already there.

And then the second half, which is the definition of it.

He that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works.

Ceased from his own works. That is what entering rest means, and it is very specific. Not doing lighter works. Not doing works that restore you for the next works. Ceasing.

And then the comparison, which is astonishing when you look at it. As God did from his.

God did not rest on the seventh day in order to be more effective on the eighth. There was no productivity argument anywhere in Genesis. He finished, and He rested, and the rest was not purchasing anything.

You are invited into the same kind of rest God took, and no rest anywhere in Scripture has ever once been justified by what it produced. The Spirit of God is what takes a purpose off an hour in a woman's own evening, and the written word says he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

Thirty minutes that produce nothing

So here is the assignment, and every word of the condition matters.

Take thirty minutes tonight that produce nothing and are reported to nobody.

Nothing produced. Not a tidied drawer, not a walk that counts toward something, not a bath that helps your back, not a rest that means you will be better tomorrow. If it improves anything, it has a purpose, and the purpose is the problem.

And reported to nobody. Do not tell anyone you rested. Telling is a way of accounting for the time, and accounting is the audit, and the audit is what made the hour a job.

You are permitted an hour that nobody audits, and rest has never once been required to file anything afterward. Hebrews 4 says there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman stop accounting for her own time.

Thirty minutes. Warm, if possible. Sitting or lying down. Nothing in your hands and nothing achieved at the end.

It will be uncomfortable. A woman who has not had an unpriced hour in fifteen years will find the first fifteen minutes genuinely difficult, and the difficulty is the most useful information in this article.

You are able to have thirty minutes that owe nothing to Wednesday, and no hour of your life has ever once been allowed to be free. The written word in Hebrews 4 says he ceased from his own works as God did from His, and the Holy Spirit is what makes thirty unproductive minutes into care rather than into idleness.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman whose rest has always been buying something.

You are not obliged to produce anything by resting, and an hour that has to be repaid by Wednesday has never once been a free hour. I am not telling you to rest more, because you already rest and everybody watching thinks you are fine. Hebrews 4 says he also hath ceased from his own works, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes the audit out of an evening.

And this, which is the word I came here carrying:

You are invited into a rest that remains, and it has never once been issued to anybody as wages for something they finished. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a purpose off an hour, and the written word says there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, as God did from His.

Thirty minutes. Nothing produced. Nobody told.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Exchange rate running for fifteen years, you are a currency and you were never rest. Hebrews 4:9 says there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God, so by the Holy Spirit I take thirty minutes tonight that produce nothing, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that an hour has to pay for itself, you have never once been the terms God set. The written word says He ceased from His own works as God did from His, and by the Holy Spirit I am done auditing my own evenings.
  3. Father, You rested on the seventh day and never once to be more effective on the eighth. Your word in Hebrews 4:10 says he also hath ceased from his own works, so by Your Spirit I take an unpriced half hour and let it be care.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
