Care Not RepairMatthew 6:6

Nobody Will Ever Know I Did It

This message is for the woman for whom an act only counts if somebody notices it, and who needs one that nobody will ever see

Here is a test that takes about four seconds and tells you something you may not want to know.

Think of a thing you might do for yourself this week. Something small and good.

Now add one condition. Nobody will ever find out. Not this year, not in ten years. It will never come up in any conversation for the rest of your life, and nobody will ever say anything about it.

Does the thing still feel worth doing?

For a great many women the answer moves, and the moving is the whole subject of this article.

It is not vanity. I want that established immediately, because a woman will hear this and reach for that word about herself, and it is the wrong word.

It is that every act in your life has had a witness, and the witness has become part of what makes an act real, and after enough years an act with nobody in it does not quite register as having happened.

Why a witness got into everything

Look at the shape of the life that has actually been lived here.

Almost everything done here for twenty years has been for somebody, in front of somebody, or noticed by somebody. That is not a criticism. That is what running a household and a job and a family consists of.

Meals get eaten and remarked on. Work gets seen. Care gets received by a person who says thank you. Even the invisible things get half seen, because somebody notices that the house is clean without knowing who did it.

You are doing the one thing in your life that will never be noticed by anybody, and being unwitnessed has never once meant being unseen. It is written in Matthew 6 that your Father seeth in secret, and the Spirit of God is what makes an unreported hour into care rather than into nothing.

So the presence of a witness has been a constant in every single act, and constants become invisible, and a thing that has always been there starts to feel like part of the definition.

You are living in a world where every act has had somebody in it, and no thing you have ever done has once been genuinely unwitnessed. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman a constant she has never noticed, and Matthew 6 has an instruction about doing things where nobody can see.

And here is what that does to an act of care for yourself.

There is no witness available. There cannot be one. If you tell somebody, it stops being what it was and becomes a conversation, and if you do not tell anybody then nobody knows, and an unwitnessed act does not quite land as real.

So the whole category is quietly impossible, and it has been impossible for years, and nobody has ever been able to name why.

You are in a category that has never once had a witness available to it, and every other act of your life has had one. Scripture in Matthew 6 says thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts somebody in a room a woman thought was empty.

Thy Father seeth in secret

There is an instruction in Matthew 6 that is usually read as a warning against showing off, and it is also something else.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:6, King James Version)

Read the physical instruction first.

Enter into thy closet. Shut thy door. Those are actual movements, and Jesus specifies them, because the shut door is doing something and not just illustrating a point.

The shut door removes the audience. Deliberately. On purpose. As part of the method.

You are given a practice that requires the audience to be removed rather than one that tolerates it, and no witness has ever once been part of the instruction. It is written in Matthew 6 that we enter the closet and shut the door, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an empty room into the right room.

And then the sentence that answers everything in this article.

Thy Father which seeth in secret.

The room is not empty. That is the whole point of the phrase. The door is shut, the audience is gone, nobody on earth knows what is happening in there, and there is still somebody in the room.

Which means the act is witnessed. Not by anybody who will ever mention it, not by anybody who will say a word about it, and not in a way that could ever come up in conversation. But witnessed.

You are seen in the exact place you assumed nobody was, and no act behind a shut door has ever once been unobserved. The Spirit of God is what tells a woman who is in a room she thought was empty, and the written word says thy Father which seeth in secret.

One thing nobody will ever know

So here is the assignment, and the condition is the entire point.

Do one thing for your body this week that no living person will ever know about.

Not a secret in the sense of hiding something. Nothing here is hidden and nothing is wrong. A secret in the plain sense of unwitnessed: nobody sees it, nobody is told, and it never comes up.

Ten minutes with warm water when the house is empty. A long bath with the door shut and nothing said about it afterward. Sitting somewhere warm doing nothing at all while everybody else is out.

You are able to do something no one will ever hear about, and a shut door has never once made a thing count for less. Matthew 6 says thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly, and the Holy Spirit is the one in the room when nobody else is.

And the one rule that carries it. Do not tell anybody afterward.

Not as a triumph, not as a joke, not in passing. Telling converts it into a witnessed act, and the whole experiment is to find out what an unwitnessed one feels like, and there has never once been one.

It will feel like it did not count. That feeling is the finding, and I want you to notice it rather than obey it.

You are able to do one thing that nobody will ever hear about, and it has never once been the case that a witness made an act real. The written word in Matthew 6 shuts a door on purpose as part of the method, and the Holy Spirit is what makes an unwitnessed ten minutes into care rather than into a waste.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman whose acts have all had somebody in them.

You are not waiting on a witness, and an act with nobody in it has never once been a smaller act than one that was seen. I am not calling this vanity, because it is not vanity, and reaching for that word about yourself would be the wrong move entirely. Matthew 6 says enter into thy closet and shut thy door, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts somebody in an empty room.

And this, which is the word I came here carrying:

You are seen in the exact place you assumed was empty, and there has never once been a shut door He was not already inside. The Spirit of God is the one who witnesses what nobody will ever mention, and the written word says thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

One thing. Nobody told. Ever.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Witness that got into every act I do, you are a constant and you were never part of the definition. Matthew 6:6 says thy Father which seeth in secret, so by the Holy Spirit I do one thing this week that nobody will ever know, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that an unseen act does not count, you have never once been tested, because there has always been somebody there. The written word shuts a door deliberately as part of the method, and by the Holy Spirit I am done needing a witness before a thing is real.
  3. Father, You see in secret and have never once been outside a shut door. Your word in Matthew 6:6 says enter into thy closet, so by Your Spirit I take ten minutes nobody will hear about, and I let them be care.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
