There are two of them and they never meet.
The one at eleven at night is thorough. She has had the whole day to gather material, she works in a hard light with a tired subject, and she does not hurry. Her findings are detailed and they are almost always against.
The one at seven in the morning is brisk. She has four minutes, she is thinking about a bag that needs packing, and she gives a verdict in under a second on the way past. It is usually not bad. Some mornings it is almost generous.
Same face. Same woman. Same house. Two entirely different courts, sitting eight hours apart, and neither one of them has ever been informed that the other exists.
I have watched people carry this for years without ever once putting the two rulings side by side, and I think that is because of an assumption that gets made so early it never gets examined.
The assumption is that the harsher court is the real one.
Nobody decides that. It arrives already decided. The eleven o'clock finding is treated as the accurate one and the seven o'clock finding is filed as a mood, or a mercy, or the absence of proper attention, and the day proceeds on the strength of the first.
But look at what that assumption is actually doing. It is not weighing two readings. It is throwing one away, unexamined, because it was kinder.
The instability is the finding
Here is what I would ask you to notice, and it takes nothing but a moment of arithmetic.
If a measurement changes depending on when you take it, the thing that is varying is the measurement.
That is not a spiritual point. It is how measurement works. Nobody weighs a sack twice on two scales, gets two numbers, and concludes that the sack is dishonest. They conclude that one of the scales is out, and then they check both.
Your face did not change between eleven at night and seven in the morning. Seven and a half hours passed and almost nothing happened to it. What changed was the light, the tiredness, the time available, and what the day had already done to you before you got to the sink.
You are watching an instrument move rather than a face change, and that variation has never once been telling you anything about your body. The Holy Spirit is what shows a woman which part of a reading came from the room, and James 1 puts the one thing that does not vary in a place a bathroom light cannot reach.
Now go further, because this is where it gets useful.
If the two courts disagree, there is no obligation to pick one. It has felt obligatory for years, and it was never true. What two disagreeing readings actually establish is that neither of them is authoritative, and that a question of worth was never going to be settled by an instrument that swings.
And notice which way the swing runs. It runs with your tiredness. It runs with how much has gone wrong that day. The eleven o'clock judge is harshest on the days that were hardest, which tells you exactly what she is measuring, and it is not a face.
You are being handed a report on your day and reading it as a report on your body, and the two have never once been the same document. Scripture in James 1 names the Father of lights with whom is no variableness, and the Spirit of God is the one who reads a woman's tiredness back to her as tiredness.
No variableness, neither shadow of turning
James has a phrase for the opposite of all this, and it is one of the most beautiful sentences in the letters.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. (James 1:17, King James Version)
The Father of lights. Meaning the maker of every light there is, the bathroom bulb included, and the morning through the window, and the hard one over the mirror at eleven.
And what is said about Him is that He does not vary. No variableness. No shadow of turning, which is an image from a sundial, where the shadow moves all day long and never once stays put.
You are held by the one fixed thing in a world where everything else turns, and no hour of any day has ever once moved Him. James 1:17 says with Him is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a woman under the steady reading.
Everything else turns. The light turns, the hour turns, the mood turns, the shadow moves across the dial every minute of every day. He does not.
Which means there is exactly one reading of you in this universe that does not move with the hour, and it is not either of your two judges.
You are held by a reading that has never once varied with the time of night, and no shadow has ever moved across it. It is written in James 1 that with the Father of lights is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a woman under the steady reading instead of the swinging one.
And I want to be careful about what I am not saying.
I am not saying the morning judge is right and the night judge is wrong. That would be replacing one unreliable court with a slightly nicer one, and you would notice within a week. The point is not that you look better than you thought. The point is that neither court has jurisdiction, and there has been a third reading standing outside the building the entire time.
You are not required to appeal from one court to the other, and there has never once been a ruling in either that was worth the paper. The Spirit of God is what takes a woman out of the building rather than moving her between rooms in it, and the written word says with Him is no variableness.
Two lines on one piece of paper
So here is the assignment, and it is more concrete than it sounds.
Tonight, write down the eleven o'clock verdict. The actual words. Then tomorrow morning, on the same piece of paper, write down the seven o'clock one.
Then keep the paper.
That is all. No conclusion, no resolution, no decision about which is true. Two lines, dated, on one sheet, in your own handwriting.
You are writing down evidence rather than reaching a verdict, and no sheet of paper has ever once been required to settle which face is the true one. It is written in James 1 that with Him is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps a woman from ruling on herself twice a day.
There is a reason this works better than being told any of it. The two courts have never sat in the same room, and the whole system depends on them not meeting. Put them on one page and the disagreement becomes a physical object you can look at, and a disagreement you can look at loses most of its authority.
And I would keep the paper somewhere ordinary. In a drawer. Not on a wall, not as a project. Just a piece of evidence that exists now, which is more than the last thirty years have produced.
You are able to put two rulings on one page and let them argue in front of you, and there has never once been a rule that they had to be kept apart. The written word in James 1 puts the steadiness in God rather than in the hour, and the Holy Spirit is what makes writing something down an act of care rather than another inspection.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman with two judges and one face.
You are not two different women being tried in two different courts, and a verdict that moves with the hour has never once been a verdict about you. I am not telling you which court was right and I would not, because neither one of them had any standing. James 1 says with the Father of lights is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who brings a woman under the reading that does not move.
And this, which is the word I came here carrying:
You are read once, steadily, by One with whom there is no shadow of turning, and that reading has never once changed with the light in a bathroom. The Spirit of God is the one who takes a woman out of the building instead of moving her between courtrooms, and the written word puts every good gift as coming down from the Father of lights.
Two lines. One page. Keep it.
Declare this over yourself
- Court that sits at eleven at night, you are an hour and a light and you were never a verdict. James 1:17 says with Him is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, so by the Holy Spirit I write both rulings on one page, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear that the harshest reading is honest, you have never once been the truth, because it swings with my tiredness. The written word puts the steadiness with the Father of lights, and by the Holy Spirit I am done treating a night court as the real one.
- Father, You have read me once and steadily and never once at a different hour differently. Your word in James 1:17 says there is no shadow of turning with You, so by Your Spirit I step out of both courtrooms and let the washing at that sink be care again.
