Nothing In The Photograph Shows What I Gained

This message is for the woman who can list what her face has lost in ten years and has never once been asked to list what she gained

Somebody puts an old picture in front of you and you can do the whole thing in four seconds.

You could itemize it. The face at thirty eight, and the face now, and every difference between them, in order, with the biggest one first. You have never rehearsed that list and you know it by heart.

Now try the other one.

Name five things you have gained in those ten years. Out loud. Right now.

It takes much longer. Most people cannot do it at all on the first attempt, and the ones who can are usually reaching for things that sound like achievements rather than things that are actually true.

That gap is what this whole piece is about. Not the photograph. The fact that one list is instant and the other one has to be built from nothing.

Back home there is a thing that happens with land. Nobody photographs a field over ten years, so nobody looks at a field and sees a decline. What people say about a field that has been worked well for a decade is that it is in good heart.

You have never once been described that way to yourself.

Why one list is faster

There is a reason the loss list runs in four seconds and it is not that the losses are more real.

It is that the losses are visible and the gains are not.

Everything on the first list is a surface. It can be photographed, compared, and pointed at. Ten years of change on a face is a physical thing sitting in front of you in two images.

You are comparing the only part of ten years a camera was ever able to hold, and the rest of it has never once been photographable. Job 42 records a man whose best years were the ones on the far side of his losses, and the Spirit of God is what makes a woman weigh the half that no image contains.

Everything on the second list is invisible. What is known now that was not known then. What no longer frightens anybody. What can be survived. Who you became to somebody who needed you. The things that no longer get explained to people. The judgment that took a decade of being wrong to build.

None of that photographs. So none of it gets counted, and a thing that never gets counted starts to feel like a thing that did not happen.

You are running an inventory that can only see surfaces, and the invisible half has never once been entered anywhere. The Holy Spirit is what makes a woman count a thing she has never counted, and Job 42 says how the latter end of a man compared with his beginning.

And here is what makes the imbalance so heavy.

The visible list refreshes constantly. Every mirror, every photograph, every shop window updates it, several times a day, without being asked.

The invisible list has to be built by hand, deliberately, in a quiet moment, by somebody who has decided to build it. It has never been built once in your life.

So one side of the ledger has ten years of automatic entries and the other side is blank, and you have been reading that as a result rather than as a filing error.

You are looking at a blank column and reading it as a total, and it has never once been filled in by anybody. Scripture in Job 42 records a latter end greater than a beginning, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a pen in a woman's hand.

The latter end more than the beginning

At the end of the book of Job, after everything, there is a sentence that people usually read too quickly.

So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. (Job 42:12, King James Version)

The latter end. Not the middle. Not the strong years.

And more than his beginning, which is a comparison being made in the opposite direction from the one everybody runs. The beginning is not the high point of the story. It is the thing the end is measured against and found greater than.

Now, I want to handle that honestly, because Job's latter end included new possessions and new children, and a careless preacher could turn that into a promise about circumstances. It is not one, and I am not making it one.

What I am pointing at is the direction of the comparison, and where the weight of the sentence sits.

You are inside a story whose direction Scripture has never once assumed runs downward, and the beginning has never been the part that carried the most. It is written in Job 42 that the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman consider a direction she has not considered.

And notice something about Job specifically.

Nothing that happened to him was undone. His losses were real, they stayed real, and the book does not pretend otherwise. The latter end being greater is said alongside all of that, not instead of it.

That is exactly the accounting you need. Not a claim that nothing was lost in ten years. A claim that the loss was never the whole ledger.

You are permitted to hold a real loss and a real gain in the same decade, and the two have never once canceled each other out. The Spirit of God is what lets a woman count both columns without lying about either, and the written word says the Lord blessed the latter end more than the beginning.

Five things, on paper

So here is the assignment, and it is written rather than felt.

Write down five things ten years gave you, and keep the paper.

Not achievements. Not things that would sound impressive at a table. Gains, in the plainest sense: things that are yours now and were not yours then.

I am not frightened of that any more. I know when somebody is lying to me. I can be in a room and not manage it. I know what I actually think about three or four large questions. I am not required to be liked by everybody. My daughter tells me things.

You are holding a list that no photograph has ever once been able to hold, and not one item on it showed up in any picture taken of you. Job 42 says the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning, and the Holy Spirit is what makes a woman count the part that does not photograph.

Five. On paper, in your handwriting, because the point is that the column exists physically for the first time.

And keep it. In a drawer, in a book, anywhere you will come across it again. The visible list gets refreshed by every mirror in your house, and this one has to be refreshed by finding a piece of paper, so put it somewhere findable.

You are able to write a column that has been blank for a decade, and there has never once been anything preventing it except that nobody thought to. The written word in Job 42 puts the latter end above the beginning, and the Holy Spirit is what turns five lines on a piece of paper into care rather than into an exercise.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who can list one column in four seconds.

You are not a decade of subtractions, and the speed of that list has never once been evidence that it was the whole account. I am not telling you nothing changed in ten years, because things did and you know they did and I am not going to insult you. Job 42 says the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who puts a pen in a woman's hand.

And this, which is the word I came here carrying:

You are somebody whose latter end God has never once assumed to be the lesser part, and no photograph ever taken has been able to hold the half that actually counts. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an invisible column visible, and the written word says the Lord blessed the latter end more than his beginning.

Five things. On paper. Keep it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. List that runs in four seconds, you are the visible half and you were never the account. Job 42:12 says the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning, so by the Holy Spirit I write five gains down tonight, in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear that a blank column means nothing, you have never once been checked. The written word puts a latter end above a beginning, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading an unfilled page as a total.
  3. Father, You blessed a latter end more than a beginning and never once assumed the direction ran downward. Your word in Job 42:12 says so plainly, so by Your Spirit I count both columns honestly and give this body some care tonight.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
